UPSI Student Village is the first concession project under Built-Lease-Maintain-Transfer (BLMT) scheme implemented by the Economic Planning Unit (EPU). As a pioneering project, the team set several precedents for student hostel projects under concession. This includes the concession agreement, area calculation per student, typology of student accommodation and facilities buildings.
The brief is to provide a complete student village incorporating hostels and student facilities at UPSI’s new Sultan Azlan Shah Campus in Proton City incorporating EPU and UPSI need statements.
The masterplan consists of three accommodation clusters for 5,184 students and two central facilities buildings. Each accommodation cluster consist of six 5-storey blocks designed in a circular shape; complete with parking spaces, outdoor games court, management office and a Principal’s bungalow.
The hostels are designed as a three bedroom apartments; the first in Malaysia. The careful positioning of 10 apartments per floor allows maximum cross ventilation for passive cooling. The central facilities building accommodating food court style dining space at ground level and multipurpose hall at upper level.
Students in UPSI graduated as future teachers. The modern architectural language with soaring roof designed to arouse curiosity and install a sense of place. The colours are derived from UPSI logo composed in reference to Mondrian’s abstract paintings.
